In your own profile, you can click on “See connections” rather than hunt around for that option (note that in a different member’s profile, you will only see the number of connections, not a link to view them). The option to “Add a profile section” from your own profile is much easier to find as well. I also like that more of the summary is visible now than in the previous update. You have three lines instead of two to communicate your value proposition and entice people to read more. We all know that “the only thing that is constant is change” (Heraclitus), and this adage is especially true when it comes to social media platforms. Yet no matter how well we understand this truth, change still catches us off guard. This one gave me a bit of a shock, as it looks like I will need to replace the images in my book very soon. Other changes to the visual experience of LinkedIn have been afoot since my last update in December 2017. Here’s some of what’s been evolving on LinkedIn in 2018. Video in Groups and Posts LinkedIn has improved the sharing experience in groups and article posts by allowing videos. To post a video in a group, Start a conversation with your group by clicking in the details field and pasting in the URL of the video. You may need to add a space after pasting in the URL to see the video populate the preview field below. Once the preview is in place, you can delete the ugly URL and give your post a title and further details if you like. To post a video in an article, go to your home page, and then enter a URL in the box that says “Share an article, photo, video or idea.” Or, click on “Video” to attach a file from your computer. Images in Comments When you comment on an article, there’s now an option to increase visual appeal by adding a photo. An image can draw more attention to your comment, so go for it! Click on the camera icon and attach any photo from your files. Note that you cant post an image only; you must also leave a written comment. Here’s what your image might look like in a conversation: LinkedIn GIFs LinkedIn has for some reason implemented GIFs in their messaging. I personally am anti-GIF, and I don’t think they belong anywhere, much less on a business platform. However, there are many people who disagree with me, and if you want to use GIFs in more casual interactions on LinkedIn, have fun! Freneau uses fancy and imagination to describe the power of escape, Bryant utilizes nature as a means of escape as harmony and stillness can be found among it, and Poe focuses on dreaming as a way to escape the harshness of one’s daily existence. In Philip Freneau’s poem, â€Å"The Power of Fancy, the poet centers on the theme of escapism through the celebration of fancy and the power of imagination. Freneau opens the poem with addressing the reader as a â€Å"wakeful, vagrant, restless thing,/Ever wandering on the wing,/Who thy wondrous source can find,/fancy, regent of the mind† (Freneau). The speaker of the poem is aware that life can become monotonous and exhausting at times, and that fancy is a faculty of the mind that allows for escape from it. Freneau goes on to write that â€Å"these suns and stars that round us roll!/What are they all, whereer they shine,/But Fancies of the Power Divine!† (Freneau). The speaker of the poem constantly wishes to go somewhere else to be taken away from his current state of reality while asking for imagination to â€Å"Waft [him] far to sout hern isles/Where the softend winter smiles,/To Bermudas orange shades,/Or Demararas lovely glades† (Freneau). Imagination and â€Å"fancy, lead [him] wandering still† and able to seek escapism (Freneau). The speaker of the poem constantly wishes to wander to other places, and the fancy in his mind is a sufficient means of doing so. Fancy and imagination are celebrated in Freneau’s poem, â€Å"The Power of Fancy,† as both states of the mind allow one to seek happiness, peace, and solace, and wander to blissful places as reality is temporarily blocked out. In William Cullen Bryant’s poem, â€Å"An Inscription for the Entrance to a Wood,† escapism is expressed through the power and peacefulness of nature. Bryant begins the poem by admitting that it requires â€Å"no school of long experience, [to know] that the world/Is full of guilt and misery† (Bryant). The speaker encourages those who â€Å"hast seen/Enough of all its sorrows, crimes, and cares,/To tire thee of it, enter this wild wood† (Bryant). This poem makes it apparent that life is hard as it can sometimes be full of disappointments and sadness, but offers hope in the fact that nature is a place where one can escape from all of that. Being surrounded by â€Å"the calm shade/Shall bring a kindred calm, and the sweet breeze/That makes the green leaves dance, shall waft a balm/To thy sick heart† (Bryant). No matter what one may be going through and currently experiencing, nature can help to heal a heart that is in pain. Nature has the power to off er escape through its vast beauty and the fact that the sublimity of it allows one to feel small in comparison, as the day’s trials become diminished in the company of it. The speaker explains that if escape is needed â€Å"thou wilt find nothing here/Of all that pained thee in the haunts of men/And made thee loathe thy life† (Bryant). Nature is void of the pains of reality as the serenity and bliss that it offers can make one enjoy life again, even if just momentarily. Just as many insects and animals find their inhabitance and life to be dependent on nature, the speaker expresses that nature can bring people back to life, too as â€Å"throngs of insects in the shade/Try their thin wings and dance in the warm beam/That waked them into life† (Bryant). As the toils of reality begin to dull a person’s spirit, escaping to nature can reawaken one to the beauty and wonder of life. Nature can allow one to â€Å"breathe fixed tranquility,† and find peace apart from the demands of everyday life (Bryant). Nature can be calm and has the power to soothe sadness as it is a place to escape to that is not demanding anything in return. Listening to a gentle stream as it â€Å"sends forth glad sounds, and tripping o’er its bed/Of pebbly sands, or leaping down the rocks,/Seems, with continuous laughter, to rejoice In its own being,† it is clear that nature is a place that one can go to seek refuge from pain and struggle, and where one can be separated from reality (Bryant). Bryant’s poem examines the need for escape and the power of nature as a means of escapism as it offers a serene and peaceful place for one to remember that life is still as beautiful as the innocent and naà ¯ve versions of ourselves once thought it to be. Edgar Allan Poe’s poem, â€Å"Dreams,† focuses on the potential of dreams to serve as a necessary escape from an unfulfilling or unhappy existence. The speaker of the poem regards dreams as being â€Å"better than the cold reality of waking life, to him whose heart must be,/And hath been still, upon the lovely earth,/A chaos of deep passion, from his birth† (Poe). Poe is a writer who continuously focuses on themes that have little to no place in actual reality, as he experienced his own hardships in life that he preferred to not express in his works. Poe must have found his own value in dreams, as he faced a hard life immediately after the innocence of his childhood. While sleeping and allowing the mind to escape to a dream, â€Å"’twere folly still to hope for higher Heaven./For I have revell’d when the sun was bright/I’ the summer sky, in dreams of living light† (Poe). In a dream, anything is possible as one can feel completely remov ed from current struggles. Sleeping and dreaming are a means of escape as the mind takes itself to someplace else. The speaker of Poe’s poem expresses that â€Å"I have been happy, tho’ [but] in a dream./I have been happy—and I love the theme† (Poe). This line in the poem seems to reveal that happiness is not attained, nor a known feeling in his daily life, as pain of loss and the sorrow associated with continuous struggle can prevent it. While dreaming, however, the speaker escapes to a place where happiness can be found, where reality temporarily has no bearing. Being awake is being subjected to harsh realities, but â€Å"dreams! in their vivid colouring of life/As in that fleeting, shadowy, misty strife† are an alternative to that (Poe). Poe’s poem seems to celebrate the wonderful capacity of dreams to carry one’s mind away from a dark reality that can sometimes seem inevitable, to a place where none of that seems to exist. In a dream, escapism is possible as the mind can take itself anywhere, and a deep sleep is a temporary time of peace amid struggle. Escapism has long been a powerful topic in literature as it provides a space for one to find freedom from the pains of reality. Philip Freneau, William Cullen Bryant, and Edgar Allan Poe are three poets that all seem to find value in a poetry of escape. Literature and poetry inherently are a means of escape as the minds of readers are brought to another world and another place as they read them. But in their various poems, these writers further examine the nature of escape through writing about ways that one can momentarily find solace even during times of immense challenges. Reality can be dark, harsh, and full of sorrow, and Freneau, Bryant, and Poe all seem to address this in their poems. Although they each focus on different ways to find an escape from the lack of fulfillment offered from daily life, they thoroughly express the beauty and importance in it. In his poem, â€Å"The Power of Fancy,† Freneau centers his poem on the ability of the mind to escape from pain and sa dness through fancy and imagination. Freneau views these two faculties of the mind as being modes in which one can wander to happier places, and be faraway from reality, even if just temporarily. Bryant’s poem, â€Å"An Inscription for the Entrance to a Wood,† emphasizes the power of nature as a means of escape. According to his poem, escapism can be found through nature as it offers solace, peace, serenity, and tranquility, a desired change of pace from a demanding, exhausting reality. In Poe’s poem, â€Å"Dreams† he regards sleeping and dreaming as being an escape from an existence of discontent. Poe reveals in his poem that happiness can be found while dreaming as the mind can allow one to wander to a better place, and to better times.

I like it how they had the meeting in the beginning and chose a leader. One thing I feel is a challenge for them is that they are too young to handle the job of starting a life on an island. If I were the main character, Ralph, I would put my foot down and act like a leader. He needs to take charge or else Jack will take over the job of bossing everyone around, which is what I think is happening at this point. They should’ve had someone watching the fire when that ship passed by. I feel that Ralph wouldn’t be so mad at Jack if this were Jack’s first time screwing up. All of Jack’s disagreement with Ralph before this point made Ralph even madder. I just feel that soon the island will split up between Jack and his hunters and Ralph and the other. Jack is very bossy so he is also trying way too hard to be a higher authority than Ralph. I love the idea that this book gives of children trying to survive and it seems as if it’s just not going to work out very well. I also found very fascinating that Simon went into the woods alone to get away from chaos, which is something I would’ve done as well. I have now reached the part in the book where I just can’t stop reading. I am starting to like it more with all the action and drama happening. I like it how the children are now used to life in the island but that can also be a bad thing, they are too comfortable. Jack and his hunters made me mad especially since they were happy about the pig, even the other ware happy except for Ralph, Simon, and Piggy. I would’ve been disappointed in myself if I was Jack and not mad at Ralph for getting upset. Things in the island are getting crazy and out of control and I think that they just need to be a little more mature. Ralph did what I would do as well which is call them into a meeting and point out what they are all doing wrong. I think the rest should’ve listened and change their ways but I don’t they will. Jack finally did something right by comforting the littluns through telling them if there is a beast he will hunt it down. I don’t think this will keep them calm for long but at least it gives them some temporary happiness. It seems as if Jack, Simon and Piggy are the only ones who are trying to leave the island while the others are being foolish. 08/12/12 Page 84 The book is becoming clearer to me now and I realize that there is a war going on. I don’t understand why Ralph didn’t go see if the fire was on so the jets could spot it since he always freaks out about the fire. I hate it how Sam and Eric are slow enough to think a shadow is the monster, and how the other believes the same. I love that the Author added this parachute to scare them because it just makes it more interesting. Now if it was I who was encountering this shadow would be much more intelligent about it and see that it is just a shadow. I just detest it that they are over reacting and seeing things that are not there. The boys then did what I would’ve done by no which is look for the beast. When they were looking in the cave and walking around the island I appreciated how they had some fun and acted like kids. I liked that the book shows the war of savagery and civilization that can happen when a group of kids are stuck in a stranded island. It showed what chaos just children could make just by being stranded without adults to tell them what to do. It was a believable book even with the extreme things that happened. I didn’t like how they didn’t follow the rules from the beginning but I guess that is what made the fight between the two sides start. It truly upset me how careless Jack was about others and how he just wanted to be king and for everyone else to suffer. He treated Piggy and Ralph and everyone like trash and he is just not a moral person. When the ship passed by and the fire was out my hatred for Jack just grew even more. What I think was happening was that Jack just wanted to have too much fun. Ralph was a great and just person but Simon was the character who I liked the most. He did not really follow either side and was just to himself but I think that is why he died. If I were Simon I wouldn’t had gone into the woods alone. I liked the way the author sent the message to Simon from the lord of the flies and then got rid of Simon from the story. It was interesting that the book was not full of happiness and it was just very realistic. Stories aren’t always happy, even if kids are involved, and this book is a great example of that. I also really enjoyed his love for the peaceful place in the woods where he would go to just relax and be away from everyone. I also enjoy having time to myself to just enjoy the good things around me. One thing I loved about this book was the beast and the significance of the beast. At first I thought it might be just an animal trying to scare the kids and they are over reacting. I then realized it was real when I reached the part where it talked about the parachute. At last the sow’s head explained the meaning of it and it just caught my attention. The perception of the beast being in all of us really fascinated me. It is hard to admit but we do all have a scary and evil beast inside of us that makes us want and feel the need to do things we shouldn’t. I can absolutely relate to having that within me and it is somewhat terrifying to believe. The ending was fairly happy but still very out of the ordinary. I found it weird that the pilot cared so much about what the kids did in the island rather than just being happy to find them. The pilot shouldn’t be criticizing the kids for doing suck horrific things on the island if they are just kids. I would’ve been upset at the pilot if I was Ralph or one of the others. I hope that after being recued the boys were all right and everything was okay.
